Description
Paul coached basketball for more than forty years. His coaching experience includes a stint at Hants West Rural High School where he coached the senior “B” boys in 1963-64, the senior “A” boys in 1965-66 and a year at Kensington Rural High School (P.E.I.) where he coached the junior boys in 1968. In 1969, Paul started his tenure in Middleton Regional High School. As a valued staff member he coached the senior “B” boys in 1969-70, the junior “A” boys for 14 seasons between 1971 and 1987, the junior “B” boys for 17 seasons and the senior “A” boys from 1971 through the date of his induction into the Wall of Fame. Coach Shaffner also instituted a basketball program for boys age 7-13 (established in 1975) and both a summer program for young teens and a men’s summer league. He also attended numerous coaching schools south of the border and coached at many basketball camps.
We are all richer due to the passion, energy and dedication that Paul Shaffner brought to the game of basketball in the Valley region. Paul retired from teaching in June of 2000 and a quote from him that year sums up his philosophy: “My mission was, and continues to be, to give those who want to play basketball the fullest opportunity by having facilities open and available and to offer competent instruction.”
