Joe made his professional debut in the Sportsmen’s Meets in 1946 in Atlantic City, N.J. Little did he know he would be performing, off and on, for the next thirty-one years. From 1946 to 1960 he participated along with many other Nova Scotia sportsmen. From 1960 to 1977 he participated and promoted these events with his older brotherin “Hank Peters Lumber Jack Shows Inc”. These performances took him to Vermont, New Jersey, Pennsylvannia, Tennessee, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Nebraska and Wisconsin. At fifty years of age in Omaha, Joe received a standing ovation for a “mini-strip” down to his polka dot briefs while on a rolling log then standing on his head while balanced on a stool!<\/p>\n
The grueling road trips were taking a tool on work and family commitments for Joe in the mid 1970’s. In 1975 he had his entire family involved in the First Maritime Sports show in Saint John, NB. In 1977 he demonstrated the sport of log birling locally with a performance at the Kingston Park.<\/p>\n
Joe Peters was elected Chief of the Horton First Nation, a position he served with the same zeal and dignity he exhibited in sports and work. He passed away in Middleton on April 27, 1996.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Joseph Bernard Peters was born in Bear River. As a lad Joe learned the sport of logrolling\/birling, axe theowing, log chopping and canoe tilling\/jousting from his father Chief Louis Peters. He first performed these events in Bear River and later in Lake William, Lunenburg Co. in the Guides Meets.
