During World War II, Bill narrowly escaped with his life when his Canadian Navy ship was torpedoed in the North Atlantic.<\/p>\n
Besides hockey, Bill excelled in numerous other sports.\u00a0 In curling, Bill skipped Bridgetown to the Nova Scotia Legion Championship in 1957 with a second place finish at the Canadian Championships in Saskatchewan.\u00a0 In lawn bowling, he combined with Middleton’s Jack MacNeil to capture the Nova Scotia Doubles Championship and a Bronze medal at the Canadian finals in Vancouver.\u00a0 He excelled in baseball and softball and, in golf, sported a handicap of 6 in his prime.<\/p>\n
Bill coached minor baseball and hockey from 1952 to 1960, served as a Town Councillor in Bridgetown from 1954 to 1962 and was chairman of the Regional Housing Commission for 12 years.\u00a0 He also managed to find time to own and operate a barbershop for 40 years.<\/p>\n
