Description
In 1994 Melissa was selected Female Athlete of the Year by Nova Scotia Hockey. In 1995 she played on the Nova Scotia Canada Games Team and was selected Best Forward at the Hockey Night in Boston Girls Summer Showcase. In her graduating year from MRHS in 1996-97, in a further example of her leadership and tenaciousness, she co-captained the MRHS Girls Soccer Team to the NSSAF Division II Championship – already on our Wall – and so Melissa will be a double-inductee into our Wall of Fame.
After high school Melissa’s achievements in hockey continued full bore. In 1997-98 she played on the Nova Scotia Women’s Provincial hockey team at the Esso National Championships, a feat she would again accomplish in both 2004 and 2005. While with the Calgary Lightning Melissa trained at the Olympic Oval and their team won the “A” Provincials. The following year she played Club hockey in Alberta, then began a 3½ year collegiate career with the Mount Royal Cougars in the Alberta College Athletic Conference. Playing in her full three years with the Cougars, Melissa was named All Star Forward each year, was second in League scoring by one point the first year, then first in the next two years.
For the past ten years she has played in the Alberta Senior Women’s AA League with Calgary Coyotes, winning three scoring titles, finishing second twice and sixth in 2012-13.
The Sports Heritage Wall of Fame is honored to welcome Melissa Welton as a most deserving inductee.
