Description
He began helping lead the Annapolis Special Olympics with Bowling at LMK Lanes in Middleton every Saturday morning until its closing. Many of the Bowling athletes he worked with won many Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals at Provincial competitions. Jim coached his own children for nearly ten years in summer soccer so it was a natural fit for him to become the Summer Soccer Coach for Annapolis Special Olympics. These soccer tournaments were held nearly every summer except during Nationals, and once more Annapolis under Jim’s tutelage won many Medals for 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.
Jim had his greatest success Nationally in Cross Country Skiing, with his Athletes on Team Nova Scotia. In 2015 Eileen and Tim Prosser and James Dowling all won Provincially and qualified for Nationals in Newfoundland in 2016, with all securing Gold. Dylan Taylor won Gold Provincially in 2019 and Nationally at Thunder Bay in 2020. Jim was Nova Scotia Special Olympics Cross Country Ski Coach at Nationals in both 2016 and 2020.
Since 2016 the Floor Hockey held at the MRHS Gym has morphed under Jim’s direction into a Physically Active Lifestyle, or PAL, night every Wednesday from 7:30 to 9:00 pm where the participants pick their own activities, be they basketball, volleyball, badminton, washer toss or whatever they please, much to everyone’s delight.
The Sports Heritage Wall of Fame is honoured to welcome Jim Spurrell as a most deserving Builder Inductee.
