In her two years at the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro, Jan played varsity soccer, volleyball and field hockey. She made varsity basketball as well but opted instead to become a referee. Following graduation in 1968, she taught one year at New Ross Consolidated School and one year at MRHS. After marrying Canadian Forces Serviceman Brent Davis, she lived in Guelph, Ontario for a year where the first of her two children was born.
In 1971, Jan returned to MRHS for a most illustrious run of thirty-two years of teaching and coaching. Through her teaching career. she coached: senior girls badminton for 24 years, track for 17 years and assisted for 17 years, junior girls volleyball for 13 years, senior girls basketball for 10 years, senior girls field hockey for 7 years, senior girls volleyball for 4 years and one year each of junior boys and senior boys volleyball. The senior boys volleyball won Western Regionals the year she coached them. Her junior girls teams won three volleyball Regionals while her senior girls volleyball teams won three silver medals at NSSAF Provincials. In 1980-81, Jan co-coached the senior girls to the NSSAF Provincial Basketball Championships. In 1992, she organized Beach Volleyball at the Rotary Park and ran this very successful summer program for four years.
Jan found time during her busy teaching and coaching career to complete her Bachelor of Education at Acadia University in science and physical education. The youth of Middleton and area have been well served by Jan (Prall) Davis with over 80 years of coaching packed into 34 years of teaching. Female athletes have had an excellent role model in Jan.
