Description
From 1965 to 1972, Gary successfully pursued a B. Comm and L.L.B. at Dalhousie University. At Dal, he served as assistant manager and later manager of the Basketball Tigers and also was statistician for basketball and football. With the Dal “Gazette” he was sports reporter, editor and columnist. From 1970-72, Gary’s commanding voice was employed as the public address announcer for basketball games. In 1971, he was Umpire-in-Chief for Middleton Minor Baseball and he coached the Middleton Mosquito Baseball team in 1972.
Back in the Valley with N.S. Legal Aid until 1979, Gary served as a sportscaster with Annapolis Valley Radio and also with Kings Kable. He served as President of the Bluenose Senior Baseball League, President of Nova Scotia Baseball Association. Vice President of Baseball Canada and President of the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League.
Since 1979, Gary has been employed by the Halifax Regional Municipality as Assistant Prosecuting Officer and later as Senior Crown Attorney. Since 1981 he has been the public address announcer for Dalhousie Tigers Basketball and beginning in 1987 he also took on similar duties for AUAA/AUS Basketball Championships and CIAU/CIS Basketball Championships as well as the NCAA Basketball Showcase events and the U22 Tournament of the Americas Basketball Tournament in 2004. Gary has served two years as president and one year as treasurer for Basketball Nova Scotia and has been a member of the organizing committee for AUAA/AUS and CIAU/CIS Basketball Championships. In 2003, Gary was the recipient of the prestigious Joel Jacobson Volunteer of the Year Award at the CIS Basketball Championships.
Gary Holt has left his mark as a builder in sports, not just in the Middleton area, but also in the Annapolis Valley, Halifax and throughout Nova Scotia and Canada.
