Description
In 1958, along with Abbe and George Warden and Art Lightfoot, Ted Cumming originated the first summer hockey school in the world. From its inception in Kentville, N.S. with 132 boys under Canada’s World Championships coach, Greg Currie, and former NHL star, Hank Goldup, it nearly doubled to 228 boys in 1959 and continued to grow until its demise in 1965. However, it spawned a plethora of other hockey schools, not only across Canada, but into the United States and other parts of the world spreading the success of the great game of hockey.
Ted moved to Ontario and beyond after 1959 and eventually became President of Avco Financial Services International at a time when the World Hockey League (1972- 79) was formed. Avco became the proud sponsor of the Championship Cup. With the disbanding of the WHL, Ted Cumming was instrumental in having the Avco Cup donated to Nova Scotia Sports Heritage Center.
Ted Cumming has been inducted into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame and will always be remembered as a player, an innovator and a tremendous supporter of hockey.
