Description
Mary Lu’s coaching journey reflected a willingness to step in wherever young athletes needed her most. From coaching Middleton Minor Hockey throughout the 1990s, to helping establish the Girls High School Hockey League, to leading badminton and track and field at Middleton Regional High School, she devoted herself to creating meaningful opportunities for students across multiple sports. Her commitment to excellence was recognized in 2007 when she received the NSSAF Outstanding Service Award, a fitting honour for someone whose impact reached well beyond the playing surface.
Over 18 years of coaching, Mary Lu guided countless athletes as they progressed to regional and provincial competition, encouraging them to develop not only their athletic ability but also their confidence, teamwork, and character. Whether coaching on the ice, at the track, or in the gymnasium, she was known for her steady leadership, unwavering encouragement, and genuine care for every athlete who wore the uniform.
For Mary Lu, sport has always been about more than competition. It has been about building community, opening doors for young athletes, and creating an environment where effort, respect, and perseverance could flourish. Her legacy lives on in the programs she helped establish and in the countless athletes whose lives were shaped by her guidance and encouragement.
The Sports Heritage Wall of Fame is proud to recognize Mary Lu Hicks as a truly deserving Builder Inductee.
