Long time M.R.H.S. Coach Hugh Laurence certainly had of plethora of athletic talent to draw on when selecting his Senior Girls Volleyball team for 1978 – 79. Surprisingly when finished he had selected four grade 12 veterans, one from grade 11, four from grade 10, and even two from grade 9. Their outstanding ability was evident by their season record of 70 wins versus only 7 losses. They won six of the seven tournaments they entered, including the prestigious Cobequid Educational Centre Tournament in Truro, and placed second to Miramichi, N.B., at the Dalhousie Tournament. Although only a “B” Division School within the N.S.S.A.F. structure they played in the “A” Division. Hosting the Provincial Championship within the friendly confines of M.R.H.S. they roared through preliminary play with a perfect 6 wins and 0 losses. They defeated the ever-strong C.E.C. team in the final to cop the first Provincial title by any M.R.H.S. team in twelve seasons. Certainly a job well done by a great group of athletes and their Coach.
