Description
Despite a fairly successful regular season, the MRHS Girls succumbed in playoffs for the third time that year to the 79-80 Provincial Champs from Digby. They qualified ranked 4th for Provincials in Glace Bay hosted by Morrison High (5th).
On opening day the MRHS squad downed the host handily 61-20. Jan Baker hoped 21 and Debbie Fritz netted 20 in the lop-sided victory. Next up was Oxford, the top ranked team in Nova Scotia who had already disposed of Kings County Academy(8th). Fritz dropped 18 points while Donna Noble hit for 13 in the 61-40 win. In the meantime Digby (2nd) advanced to the final by eliminating South Colchester (7th) and the Windsor (3rd) who had knocked off MacDonald High of Dominion(6th).
In the Championship, Digby dominated the first quarter but Middleton came out strong in the second to take a slim 21-19 lead at the half. In the second half, Middleton outscored Digby 31-28 for the 52-47 Championship victory. First year Coach Brent Baker a member of this Sports Wall of Fame for his playing prowess and long time coach of the ever-strong Cobequid Education Centre Boys team stated: “Our girls just outhustled them”. In 2006 Coach Baker was appointed coach of St.Francis Xavier Women Basketball. Jan Baker and Marci Bishop scored 18 and 15 points respectively, while Cathy MacDermid had 9 and was outstanding in rebounding. Donna Noble was named to the All Star team as well as elected as Tournament MVP. The other girls: Stacey Pellerin, Lynn Stone, Melanie Bailey, Darlene Wagstaff, Colleen Towns and Assistant Coach Jan Davis, all contributed to the teams great success!
